Rites of Passage is based in South Australia headed by Celebrant Dorothy Shorne who brings a wealth of experience in planning, writing and structuring each ceremony.

Dorothy is able to perform a range of civil ceremonies, such as marriages, handfastings, namings, commitment ceremonies, adolescent ceremonies, and all other rites of passage. She can also provide ceremonies for other times of transition or celebration, such as a house-warming, leaving a job or retirement, launching a new business, etc. Ceremonies may be conducted privately, for the Corporate, or for the Civic Sectors. Although known for her work as a marriage celebrant, Dorothy also is respected for her work in writing and delivering funeral ceremonies, naming ceremonies, re-affirmation ceremonies, and others which may not be so commonly known.

All ceremonies are created following consultation with the client, and appropriate ceremonies can be devised for varying situations. Although based in Adelaide, South Australia, enquiries from interstate or overseas are welcome.

Funeral

A civil funeral ceremony is based upon the life of the person who has died, constituting a biography or eulogy. Such a ceremony may still be spiritual, even though a non-religious service is desired. Each ceremony is prepared after careful discussion with the bereaved, and all details are verified before the funeral takes place.

Options that you may like to think about:

  • A Jazz band, or other live music
  • A basic coffin that the family decorates or covers with symbolic drapes
  • A ceremony held at a place of significance to the deceased
  • A memorial service if the cremation has been held interstate or over seas
  • A 'show and tell' of items representing the life of the deceased
  • A sharing of stories and reflections
  • A ceremony that flows into a celebratory wake.

Handfasting

A Handfasting Ceremony is one which incorporates Pagan or Wiccan beliefs and rituals. Those rituals have ancient origins, and involve respect for the earth and the environment, and for each other. In an ancient handfasting, a couple's hands were bound together as part of the ceremony.

Weddings

Each wedding is special and unique, but not sure what you want? You are welcome to explore your ideas with me. I will detail the options available and give you a range of suggestions for you to consider. Together we can devise a ceremony that suits your needs.

Namings

Ceremonies to mark the occasion and to name the child can be individually compiled to reflect the wishes of the parent in making a statement of welcome before family and friends.

It is possible to include various rituals such as lighting of candles, a sprinkling of magic dust, and the child can be named with a sprinkling of rose petals or drops of water. I have a range of reference material on appropriate poems or readings, if required. We can also include references to family and friends in writing the ceremony.
